Welcome to our FAQs — your go-to resource for quick answers to common questions about our services, team, and workflows.

  This is a living document that is updated frequently - if you have a question

  knowledge base!

## General FAQs [#general-faqs]

  **What options do I have for captions display?**

    * Traditional browser
    * Captions Embed
    * Subtitle overlay
    * Text destinations through APIs (e.g. YouTube, Zoom, etc.)
    * RTMP / CEA-608/708 Closed Captions
    * HLS Video Closed Captions

  **Can viewers customise their captions?**

    Viewers can either choose one of the presets we offer, opt for the style you can
    customise for the entire event, or they can simply customise a style that they
    prefer: fonts, sizes, colours, weights, etc. [See the caption style
    settings.](/docs/destinations/browser#settings)

  **Is Line21 screen reader friendly?**

    It is! Line 21 is entirely web-based and our components are WCAG compliant. We
    are using Mantine UI which is one of the most reader-friendly UI libraries.

  **What is the difference between closed and open captions?**

    It's a bit counterintuitive. Closed captions are the ones that can be turned on
    and off in a video player (look for the CC button). Open captions cannot be
    turned off. They are usually burned into the video itself.

  **Do you support onsite, offline captioning?**

    We can provide onsite support for live events, but would require a hardwired
    internet connection for our innovative software to support our human captioners.
    At this time, we are not providing an exclusively offline platform. Line 21
    requires internet to operate, even when used for an in-person event.

  **Do you provide professional captioners?**

    Yes, all of our human captioners are accredited and registered with the relevant
    organisation in their country of origin. We work with stenographers and voice
    writers, as methods will vary depending on language.

## CART Captioning FAQs [#cart-captioning-faqs]

  **How do I connect to Line 21?**

    The main connection method is via writer link; via keyboard macro or Stenokeys
    to output text on mouse cursor. If you are an **Eclipse** user, you can download
    our connector from your Line 21 dashboard. If you are a **CaseCAT** user, we
    invite you to open a ticket with Stenograph to support our progress in
    integrating with them.

  **How do I start and stop my session?**

    You don't - Line21 will track your active captioning minutes for you and you will be charged only for minutes used.

  **How can I work with a co-worker?**

    Co-working is simple - invite your other writers to your link, and work in tandem. The system will take text from either writer.

  **Is my writer page what the viewer sees?**

    No, viewers have a different output link that resembles traditional browser output. This is available in your 'destinations' section in the dashboard.

  **How do I send a new line of text?**

    In the Project dashboard, either yourself or the project creator can change the
    settings of line output to automatically send on:

    * New Line / Enter
    * Character length
    * Punctuation

    If you prefer to keep control in your hands, then you will need to use a
    keyboard macro to push captions on 'Enter' with a tool like Stenokeys.

  **Does Line 21 support respeaking?**

    Absolutely! We offer Dragon users a specific respeaker input page, fine tuned to counter typical respeaking issues such as 'dragging'.

## Security & data [#security--data]

  **Is client content used to train third-party AI models?**

    No. Client content processed through the configured Line 21 pipeline is not
    used to train third-party AI models. See the full [Data handling &
    retention](/docs/security/data-handling) article for vendor-by-vendor
    commitments.

  **Can specific vendors be excluded from our pipeline?**

    Yes. Vendor selection can be constrained per client engagement where policy
    requires it.

  **Is EU data residency available?**

    Yes, depending on the selected speech-recognition and translation providers.
    EU endpoints are available for selected ASR and translation providers,
    including Deepgram EU and regionalised translation endpoints.

  **Is Zero Data Retention (ZDR) available?**

    Yes. ZDR agreements are available for OpenAI and Anthropic engagements that
    require them.

  **Are HLS recordings retained?**

    By default, HLS recordings are retained for 30 days on Line 21
    infrastructure. This can be shortened or configured per client engagement.
    See [HLS streaming](/docs/destinations/hls-streaming) for setup details.
